Diverse crowd enjoys Midsummer's Eve party
by Doreen T. Cudnik Akron-Tom Best would have enjoyed the "Midsummer's Eve Party" held Saturday, August 3 at the home he and his partner Gregg Leach started building in 1991. Tragically, Best did not live to witness the event that assembled over 300 Akron area business and community leaders, activists, and entertainers, to raise money for the Positive Connection Center, a program of the newly
formed Community AIDS Network. Best died of AIDS complications in February
1995.

The August 3 gala began with cocktails and dinner provided by Gargoyles Night Club and Gourmet Nibbles. Twenty five other area businesses, from the florists that supplied the centerpieces to the sound technicians who made sure the microphones worked, also donated their services. The entertainment lineup showcased some of the most enjoyable female impersonators in Ohio, as well as live-miked numbers by nondrag performers Haggie and Dawn, Big Missy, Ronnie Roberts and Claire Russell. Crowd favorites included Miss Ginger

Dennison and Ronald Rupe, decided to pool
their resources and host an event that would raise much-needed funds for the Akron AIDS organization, while keeping the cost low enough so that it would be an affordable night out for the community.
"Last year after Tom died, [Dennison and Rupe] said, 'You always said you wanted to do this party, so let's do it,' " Leach said. "Last year we held it for about 100 people, and this year we were close to 300, so we're very pleased."
The event raised roughly $5,000 after expenses, Leach said.
Both years, money from the event went to the Positive Connection Center, but, according to Leach, if the event continues to grow, future funding will be given to the umbrella organization, Community AIDS Network.
The Community AIDS Network is the result of the recent consolidation of the NorthEast Ohio Task Force on AIDS and the Summit AIDS Housing Corporation. According to Steven Plunk, the gay risk-reduction specialist at the Network, the new organization will be carrying on with the same goals, mission, and work of the old organizations, while adding some new and innovative programs.
"Community AIDS Network does the actual bar outreach, minority outreach, and school outreach programs," Leach said. They also run the Akron AIDS Housing, Positive

Michaels performing the blues classic "If I Can't Sell It, I'm Just Gonna Sit Down On It (cuz I ain't givin' nothin' away for free)"; Danyel Vasquez go-going to "These Boots Were Made For Walkin',” and Stevie Reese Desmond, who sizzled while performing the disco classic "Got to be Real." Ms. Dee did a great job as emcee of the show, keeping the crowd laughing between acts, and I would be remiss not to mention that Ms. Northeast Ohio, Rosetta Estafan, was breathtaking as Barbra Streisand. All of the entertainers donated their time.
"I am very pleased that this event seems to draw equally between the male and female side of the gay population as well as from the straight population," Leach said. “We had a fair amount of support from unexpected places in the straight business world. It's so unusual to see a mixture like this under one roof for any purpose,” he added.
David Kovacs, the founder of Positive Connection Center, said that the money brought in from this year's event will help build a resource library and help fund other projects and programs of the center. "This year we brought in way more than we thought we would," Kovacs said. "The money will really help the center."
The Community AIDS Network is located on 667 N. Main Street, Akron 44302; phone 330-375-2000.
